Amar Agarwal is the pioneer of Phakonit, which is Phako with a Needle Incision Technology. This technique became popularized as Bimanual phaco, Microincision cataract surgery (MICS) or Microphaco. He was the first to remove cataracts through a 0.7 mm tip with the technique called Microphakonit. He has also discovered No anaesthesia cataract surgery and FAVIT, a new technique to remove dropped nuclei. The air pump, which was a simple idea of using an aquarium fish pump to increase the fluid into the eye in bimanual phaco and co-axial phaco has helped prevent surge. This built the basis of various techniques of forced infusion for small incision cataract surgery. He has also discovered a new refractive error called Aberropia. He has also been the first to do a combined surgery of microphakonit (700 micron cataract surgery) with a 25 gauge vitrectomy in the same patient thus having the smallest incisions possible for cataract and vitrectomy. He is also the first surgeon to implant a new mirror telescopic IOL (LMI) for patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration. He has also been the first in the world to implant a Glued IOL. He also has brought out the technique of IOL Scaffold in which a three-piece IOL is injected into an eye between the iris and the nucleus to prevent the nucleus from falling down in posterior capsular ruptures. Hypersonic vitrectomy for cases of PC rupture was first done by him and he was the principal investigator for the first hypersonic vitrectomy cases done in the world.

Pre Descemet’s Endothelial Keratoplasty or PDEK was started by Prof Agarwal. Dr Agarwal has designed a new instrument called the Trocar anterior chamber maintainer in complicated cases, which helps give infusion through the anterior chamber and works like a trocar cannula. He has also started a new technique of iris suturing called Single pass Four Throw (SFT) pupilloplasty. Subsequenly he started Pinhole pupilloplasty to treat patients with high astigmatism and higher order aberrations.

Dr. Agarwal has performed more than 200 live surgeries at various conferences. His videos have won many awards at the film festivals of ASCRS, AAO and ESCRS. He has more than 250 peer review articles in top journals and has also written more than 80 books in Ophthalmology which have been published in English, Spanish, portugese and chinese. He is the Chairman and managing director of Dr.Agarwals group of eye hospitals with 151 eye hospitals in 11 countries.

She completed her fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. Her research interests include the study of eye fluid biomarkers as a potential diagnostic modality in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). She also investigates clinical and surgical outcomes in eye diseases and the role of anesthesia in eye surgery, with a particular emphasis on health disparities. She is past recipient of an R03 Grant Award by the National Institutes of Aging as the Principal Investigator of a study looking at protein biomarkers for AD in the eye. As the Vice-Chair of Faculty Affairs, she works in a supportive role in the professional development and career engagement of the clinical faculty. Dr Tamer got his FRCSEd and doctorate degrees upon first introduction in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

He worked as a resident of ophthalmology in Ain Shams University from 1995 to 1998 and then promoted as assistant lecturer then to lecturer in 2002 then associate professor in 2007 and finally he is now a professor of ophthalmology since 2012.
He has more than 20 publications with 7 international publications in the field of ophthalmology in JCRS, BJO, Retina, MEAJO. He is now a reviewer for several international journals as JCRS, JRS, BJO, IJO, MEAJO, DJO and Cornea Journal. He is also a reviewer for the Egyptian Universities Promotion Committees (EUPC).

Walaa Jbara graduated from An-Najah National University with a degree in Optometry in 2016. She received training in optometry and primary eye care clinics at An-Najah University Hospital, Musallam Specialty Hospital, and many optical centers. She has gained skills in conducting comprehensive eye examinations on patients of all ages from her work history and participation in vision screenings. She had the opportunity to present her project research at the Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance (LPHA) Eighth Annual Conference, which allowed her to participate in various LPHA-funded workshops on conducting scientific research. The abstract of her research was published at the LANCET online Journal. In 2017 she worked as research and teaching assistant at An-Najah University, through this opportunity, she has gained tremendous hands-on experience in direct patient care and clinical research. In addition, she was the primary research assistant for a research collaboration between An-Najah University and the Swiss Tropical Public Health Institute. In 2020 she started working at St. John Eye Hospital Group where she was gained experience in refractive errors management and refractive surgeries. Walaa now is the head of the refractive surgery department of Nablus Specialty Hospital. She is an active participant in local and regional conferences and has previously presented lectures and workshops in several local and regional conferences. Walaa’s research interests include keratoconus, corneal donation, refractive surgery, and dry eyes.

Wondu Alemayehu was trained as a general medical practitioner, specialized in Ophthalmology (at Halie Silassie I University then at Addis Ababa University (AAU)), then MPH and a certificate in Preventive/Community Ophthalmology (at the School of Hygiene and Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, USA). Wondu Served as faculty member, Assistant and then promoted to Associate Prof., in the Department of Ophthalmology, of the Medical Faculty of AAU for over 15 years and participated in teaching, service delivery and research. He conducted research in eye health/trachoma and published, as an author and/or co-author, in reputed peer reviewed medical journals. Subsequently, Wondu worked as a Country Director of Project ORBIS International, Inc.–Ethiopia. In this capacity, he was instrumental in playing a pivotal leadership role in the development of viable eye health program in Ethiopia. This included advocacy for eye health, strengthening of tertiary academic eye health institutions and as part of rural eye health program, the implementation of the complete SAFE strategy for the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem. Other critical components of the country program were building the first viable Eye Bank in sub-Saharan Africa and building medical equipment management capacity as well as research in eye health.
Currently, Wondu is working as a Global Trachoma Technical Adviser to The Fred Hollows Foundation and General Manager and Consultant Ophthalmologist, at Berhan Public Health & Eye Care Consultancy Plc.
During his professional career, Wondu received various awards and certificates including: International Agency for Prevention of Blindness’s (IAPB) 2004 regional achievement award; Certificates of appreciation by the Ophthalmological Society of Ethiopia (OSE) and Ethiopian Optometry Association (EOA). Other certificates of achievement include: The ICTC MacCallan Medal for outstanding achievement in trachoma implementation, 25 September 2014; The L’OCCITANE Foundation’s Sight Award for research, 2016; the “Bego Sew” nominee award in the field of Science, September 03, 2016, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; The Diploma of Laureate by the Abyssinia Award on October 29, 2017. Award in recognition of the development of the Eye Bank of Ethiopia October 04, 2018.
Wondu is a member of the National Committee for the Prevention of Blindness and National Trachoma Task Force; Ethiopian Medical Association and American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, he is serving as Chair of the Technical Working Group for the 2nd National Eye Health Survey of Ethiopia; the Post-operative trachomatous trichiasis (PTT) management guideline development team, and The Policy -Advocacy Committee of the OSE of which he was the 1st Secretary. Furthermore, Wondu works as Ethiopia Principal and Co- PI of ongoing research studies in trachoma.
