He has also served as a Professor at the Medical School of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland (2017-2020) and he has been elected President of the European Society of Cornea and Ocular Disease Specialists (2020-2022).
He described several innovative corneal surgical techniques that have been published in international journals such as the combination of transepithelial phototherapeutic keratectomy (Transepithelial Phototherapeutic Keratectomy, t-PTK) with Corneal Collagen Cross-linking (named “CRETAN PROTOCOL”). He has more than 320 publications and more than 12000 citations.

Dr. Paul H. Phillips is Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Director of the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute. He is also the inaugural recipient of the Stella Boyle Smith/Gissur J. Petursson, M.D., Chair in Ophthalmology. Today, he is receiving the Pat Walker Chair in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Phillips joined the faculty in September 1997. He sees patients at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Eye Clinic and the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He also completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the Emory University Eye Center in Atlanta, Georgia. His subspecialties include pediatric ophthalmology & strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology.
A native of New York, Dr. Phillips graduated summa cum laude from the State University of New York (S.U.N.Y.) at Buffalo Medical School. After interning in Hartford, Connecticut, he completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Florida Eye Center in Gainesville. He has authored more than 60 peer reviewed publications and presented at more than 100 international meetings. He was director of the pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus service prior to assuming his current role as department chair. He was senior associate editor for the Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus for 10 years (2012 – 2022) and served as director of the Consortium for Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology (2018 – 2020).
Dr. Phillips has been certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1995. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and numerous other organizations.

Walaa Jbara graduated from An-Najah National University with a degree in Optometry in 2016. She received training in optometry and primary eye care clinics at An-Najah University Hospital, Musallam Specialty Hospital, and many optical centers. She has gained skills in conducting comprehensive eye examinations on patients of all ages from her work history and participation in vision screenings. She had the opportunity to present her project research at the Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance (LPHA) Eighth Annual Conference, which allowed her to participate in various LPHA-funded workshops on conducting scientific research. The abstract of her research was published at the LANCET online Journal. In 2017 she worked as research and teaching assistant at An-Najah University, through this opportunity, she has gained tremendous hands-on experience in direct patient care and clinical research. In addition, she was the primary research assistant for a research collaboration between An-Najah University and the Swiss Tropical Public Health Institute. In 2020 she started working at St. John Eye Hospital Group where she was gained experience in refractive errors management and refractive surgeries. Walaa now is the head of the refractive surgery department of Nablus Specialty Hospital. She is an active participant in local and regional conferences and has previously presented lectures and workshops in several local and regional conferences. Walaa’s research interests include keratoconus, corneal donation, refractive surgery, and dry eyes.

Yara Naser Saleh Senan graduated with Bachelor degree in Optometry from An Najah National University in 2020. Immediately following her graduation, she worked as a research and teaching assistant in Optometry Department at An Najah National University for two years. During this time, she displayed an exceptional aptitude for imparting knowledge and cultivating a spirit of inquiry among her students. Then she got the Master degree in Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Research from Glasgow Caledonian University in the United Kingdom. This allowed her to go deeply into the her field and fostered a global perspective on eye care. Her time in the UK not only resulted in getting advanced knowledge but also provided her with the invaluable opportunity to engage with colleagues from different countries and cultures which helped her to learn about other cultures and exchanged her knowledge and experiences with her colleagues.
